Donnie Belcher


Bio

Donnie Belcher is a senior at DePaul University, majoring in Education. A published poet, Donnie also writes for the DePaula, the school newspaper, and Melanin, a new teen magazine written for and by African American young women. She serves on the executive board of Black Student Union, an umbrella organization for all of the Black organizations on campus. Donnie’s mother was imprisoned from the time she was in preschool until she was eight years old.

This letter of reconciliation expresses the complex experience of having an incarcerated mother. Belcher describes both the anger of growing up with her mother in prison and the love that transcends that anger.
